a little bit about me

Hello — I’m Kate Ferguson, the artist behind the paintings you’ll find on this website.
I was lucky enough to grow up in South West Cornwall, a region steeped in artistic heritage (as well as fishing, pasties and cream teas!). From an early age, I was surrounded by art, with influences from Lamorna, the Newlyn School, and St Ives practically on my doorstep. I loved creating art and happily embraced being labelled as the 'arty' one.
After a brief stint at Art College, life took me in a different, more technical direction. Although I dabbled here and there, it wasn’t until about 2012 that I finally found the time to devote myself properly to painting — better late than never, as they say!
Like many artists, I draw my inspiration from nature. I initially focused on wildlife art, which I’d explored at college, but in recent years my attention has shifted to sea and landscapes. My work ranges from highly detailed realism to loose, expressive seascapes that aim to capture the ever-changing movement of the ocean.
Before retiring in 2023, I balanced painting with private commissions, but these days I paint purely for pleasure. I enjoy supporting my local art community through annual exhibitions and, in recent years, have even shared my artistic journey on local radio — a fun and slightly surreal experience!
Now, with more time for my family, my garden, and myself, painting remains one passion I’ll never completely give up.
If you’ve made it this far — thank you for reading. And if you haven’t yet seen my work, you can view some of my paintings here.
